Midwifery Services - Labour and Birth

Midwifery care includes complete labour and birth services, from early labour through the delivery and into the first hours postpartum. One midwife is on-call each week and manages any labours or urgent concerns that arise in that week.

During early labour your midwife will be in contact with you by phone to answer questions, provide support and help you settle into your labour. Once active labour is established you will be cared for by your midwife until you deliver. We welcome your family, friends, and children as an important part of your birth experience. Women in midwifery care have the option of delivering at home or at hospital. We currently deliver babies at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster or Surrey Memorial Hospital in Surrey.

Midwives provide skilled clinical, physical and emotional support during labour and birth. We believe in the normalcy of birth…women's bodies are designed to do this work! We will encourage the natural process of labour with the use of mobility, water tubs, physical and emotional comfort measures, eating and drinking as you desire. We are experienced with water birth, and fathers or partners often catch their own baby with the midwife's guidance. Our time spent together prenatally ensures a trusting relationship between family and midwife. Every effort is made to ensure the privacy of your birth experience regardless of where your baby is born.

As midwives we strive to deliver babies in the least interventive, most supportive ways possible. Options for pain management, including epidurals, are available in the hospital should a client request them. In case of complications, midwives consult with appropriate physicians who will become a part of your care team. We are pleased to have positive relationships with many excellent obstetricians, pediatricians and family physicians should you require any specialized care. Midwives are trained in emergency management and work closely together and with these other members of the care team should an emergency arise.

Your baby will be born into your arms and stay there with you in a quiet and respectful environment with the people of your choice supporting you. Your midwife will help you breastfeed within the first hour after birth, provide initial newborn care and assessment, and give you information about what to expect in the coming days and weeks to monitor your baby's healthy development.

"The more I talk with other women about experiences the more delighted I am that I found you. I really cherish not only the amazing job you did at guiding me through the physical aspects of my pregnancy and birth, but
also the emotional and educational aspects. I just hope that when I am ready to do it all over again that you will be available!
