Midwifery Services - Postpartum Mother and Newborn Care After the birth, your midwife will stay with you to monitor the condition of both you and your baby for several hours. You will receive help breastfeeding and be provided information and guidance for your recovery during the early days after the birth. Your baby's health and transition will be monitored closely until he/she is stable. We will visit you in your home frequently during the first two weeks postpartum to check on you and the baby, answer questions and assist with breastfeeding or other aspects of infant care. Usually, these visits take place on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and between the 7th and 10th day. We will see you again at 2 and 4 weeks postpartum to provide ongoing care regarding your recovery, monitor your baby's growth, and continue to assist with breastfeeding and infant care. The final visit takes place at 6 weeks and includes a complete physical assessment of both mother and newborn. You will receive a copy of your records, and a summary of the pregnancy, birth and postpartum period will be sent to your family doctor when you are discharged from midwifery care. You will then return to the care of your family doctor for ongoing health care for yourself and your new baby.
